The first time I went to a spinning class was 17 years ago. It was after my Grampa Joe had died and after Jordan was born. (Jordan was named after Grampa Joe. In the Jewish culture, they name babies after someone who had passed away. Which seems weird considering my Catholicism but at the time my Jewish neighbor mentioned this fact it seemed completely appropriate.)
That first Spinning class was amazing. The instructor told us to visualize, reach inside ourselves, and pedal. It was so cathartic and almost spiritual. It was terrifically moving. I was so post-partum that I cried. It's never been the same. I tried teaching Spin for a bit and took several more classes but I never loved it. I do, however, have a Spin bike in the basement that we bought when we first moved to Ohio. It doesn't have a lot of miles on it.
Occasionally, like today, I'll put my ear buds on, put on a non-running playlist, get on that bike, close my eyes and start pedaling. I 8 count to the music. Sing a little (but not out loud when other people are in the house - that would just be rude) and get in the zone. It was terrific!
