Resting Bitch Face! How's yours? Mine's alive and well thank-you! It's all in the squint. Funnily (and yes, we are making that a word today) enough I'm not ALWAYS thinking bitchy thoughts. I mean, I do, often. But, most of the time I'm not actually thinking any thoughts at all! (Some of you know this to be true!)
In my opinion, and that's all that counts here today, a Resting Bitch Face is WAY better than a Resting Dumb Face. You know what I mean: face slack, eyes dull, mouth open, possibly a little drool. In the word of my 14 year old, "Eww"! RDF has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Nothing seems to be going on inside or out. Seeing RDF is enough to make anyone do a 180 and head back to the bar. At least with RBF you reflect some sort of personality or potential. Oh sure, approaching a RBF is intimidating but it could be worth your time! Unless of course RBF is actually bitchy then, "Eww".
I listened to an audiobook last week, I spent a lot of time in my minivan (remember what we talked about - only judge what is within someone's control). The title of the audio book was 'Blink'. It describes how people make decisions. Intuitive vs analytical. The author also described mind reading. Mind reading requires observation of emotions in the fleeting micro-second that they cross the face. Emotions begin on your face. Who knew? There are scientists who have studied the muscles of the face (and named them with long-ass Latin names) then categorized each micro-emotion by listing each muscle involved in showing each emotion. It took them 7 years!!!! (Holy shit, get a social life!) It was a tedious portion of the audio book, let me tell ya!
But! How freeing! Think about it! That fleeting emotion is our truth! For those of us who may have repressed our true feeling just to make others happy. For those of us whose initial thought is negative, it gives us a glimpse into our fears and may lead us to a more positive place. For those of us who have observed fleeting emotions, you've had insight into someone's truth. Pay attention. Trust yourself to know what you know.
The super smart friend who loaned me 'Blink' (this is why we need a wide variety of friends, they get us out of our comfort zones), demonstrated how you can change your emotions by changing your facial expression i.e. the Resting Bitch Face. Relaxing the muscles in the face that make us feel bitchy actually makes us feels calmer. Nicer even! It's actually really great!
Regarding Resting Dumb Face, well, just don't be that guy! Eww!
