She's There

I visited a friend today.  She is in a rehab facility.  She is 50 and had two strokes.  Fifty days later she is weak as a kitten and learning to do everything all over again.   She cannot speak or move alone but she is "in there" as they say.  She gestures with her fingers or gives a thumbs up.  Occasionally she will gesture but I have no idea what she means so eventually I disregard it.   That's not nice.  I'm a terrible sick person visitor.

Until 50 days ago, this friend was the picture of health and fitness.  A former college athlete, she towers over most people both in stature and spirit.   She is strong and active, has an easy smile, quick wit, and a big voice when cheering her team.

Her natural athleticism will help restore her body.    Her family and friends will do everything they can.  It is her inner strength, her sense of self, her will to be better that will be her greatest tool on her road to recovery.   She's "in there" as they say.
