I'm venturing into painting furniture. It's supposed to be fool-proof. Hence I gave it a try. And NO, it's not quite as easy as Annie Sloan made it look on her video. Annie Sloan just whisks her brush around and viola! a perfectly painted piece of furniture appears on the screen. (I think she has a lot of help off camera!)
The nature of Annie Sloan paint is to compliment and enhance the flaws of the original piece then, through the miracle of elbow grease and imagination, you have something clean and fresh.
And you know what? It kinda works!
I approached my first furniture painting project with the enthusiasm of a new mother! Everything is new with your first! New brushes, new paint, new technique. You watch the u-tube videos and read the pamphlets. You think you know what to expect. You have a plan! You are well intentioned! But then along the way you are a bit heavy handed here and a little light there. You sand a bit too much off here and not enough over there. You rub it the wrong way and you feel it starting to resent you.
You worry about it; Rub the surface; Give it new knobs; Consider what else you can do so it matches your imaginary perfect vision of what it should be.
Then finally, you just step back. You see if for what it is. Despite your mistakes, it's inherent character is shining through. It's wonderful!!!
And you will always love it. Because it is your first.
